SAFETY PATROL
CONVENTION IN CITY
gathering of children
More than 300 school children assembled at the Lewis Eady Hall this afternoon for the annual convention of the School Safety Patrol, which operates under the Autcmo. bile Association's system of protecting school children who have to cross busy streets. The children came from schools as far north as Albany, and as far south as Pukekohe and Waiuku, as well as from schools in the city and suburbs which are situated in such a position that it was thought advisable to give the pupils extra instruction in safety. A similar convention was held in Gisborne last week, another will be held in Hamilton on Thursday, and Whangarei will hold a convention earlynext year. The children were welcomed by Mr F. G. Farrell, president of the 4utcmobile Association, while the Mayor, Mr. Allum, in a brief address congratulated the members of the A.A. patrol on the fine work they had done in the past year, and said he would continue to watch their efforts with interest. A talk was given by Mr. D. J. O'Neill, Inspector of Police, who stressed that rules were made to be obeyed, and careless people ran the risk cf injuring others. Specialised safety instructions, such as the protection of younger children, were given. A march down Queen Street by the children, with bagpipes leading them, and a Christmas party given by the association, followed by a picture entertainment, concluded an educational and jolly afternoon.
