INCORRECT RETURNS
WINEMAKER FINED £100
"A RIDICULOUS PAKCE"
"It is a peculiar law against people making wine. Some of it is not wine at all, but is mostly vinegar. The whole thing is a ridiculous farce," said Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day when fining Dick Matusich £100 and costs. Defendant pleaded guilty to sending in false returns covering sales of wine he had made. Mr. Cleal, prosecuting, said that winemakers selling wine of less value than £100 in a year need not be licensed, and in May last defendant sent in returns of sales shown as £56 12/ for the year. When interviewed he produced a docket-book confirming the returns he had forwarded. However, investigation showed he had sold wine to the value of £694. on which he should have paid £150 sales tax. . Mr. Elliot, for defendant, said Matusich was a Yugoslav and did not consider he had to pay sales tax on wine sold to breweries. He had acted in ignorance. . Mr. Levien: My impression of these people is that they know all about it.
