IN PEACE AND WAR
SHIP'S SERVICE TO FIJI
GIFT TO MEMBERS OF CREW
On the last voyage of a NewZealand ship to Suva the crew of the vessel, which trades regularly to Fiji, were presented with a cheque for £680 as a Christmas present, an expression of the gratitude of residents and a reminder to those who will serve in the vessel in future that the work of the Merchant Navy is greatly appreciated by the people of Fiji who have been so well served for many years. Of the 70 members of the crew two representatives from each department were invited to the Union Company's office in Suva, where they were met by a large gathering of citizens. The Governor, Sir Philip Mitchell, who made the presentation, said the ship had served the Fiji trade well both in peace and war. Fortunately she had come safely through the war zone on each trip and her graceful lines had been a welcome sight to residents looking forward to fresh food stocks and mail from overseas. They all realised the debt they owed to ihe Merchant Navy and the great part it harl played in the 'War, but in this particular vessel they all had a personal interest. The Governor handed the master the cheque, to be equally divided among the officers and crew. Sir. Philip added that a plaque was being made for presentation to the ship to commemorate the service she had given Fiji in maintaining vital communications. The captain, who replied on behalf of his crew, said they would never forget this goodwill gesture, which they all so much appreciated.
