POSTHUMOUS AWARD
D.F.C. TO U.S. AIRMAN (0.C.) SOUTH PACIFIC BASE, Oct. 14. Lieutenant-General Millard P. Harmon, commanding United States Army forces in the South Pacific, has awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously to SecondLieutenant Alexander R. Lukich, who was killed in action on July 20' while on a strike mission against enemy shipping over the New Georgia group. Sighting a Japanese light cruiser the plane attacked at masthead level, flying into a terrific barrage of automatic weapons fire coming from at least 30 battle stations about the enemy ship. The plane dropped three 5001b bombs. The first was short, but the second was a direct hit, causing a huge explosion, followed by billows of black smoke. Within two minutes after this hit the enemy cruiser sank, few, if any, of the ship's complement escaping the fate of the vessel. The lieutenant was a member of the United States 13th Army Air Force.
