SCHOOL FIRST AID
ACCIDENT AT HOWICK REPLY TO CORRESPONDENT A reply has been made to a letter published in Wednesday's Star from "A Howick Parent" by Mrs. Maude Patten, chairman of the First Aid Equipment Committee, in which she says the sum of £13 8/ was raised by a special committee in order to purchase first aid equipment for the Howick District High School. Mrs. Patten writes that a special j committee representing the five interested districts was formed, and each E.P.S.O. branch agreed to donate 1/ per head for each child attending the school from its district. This brought in the sum of £13 8/, which was spent in purchasing a large and varied supply of first aid equipment, Avhich has been at the school for many months past and is available at all times for treating cases of accident or sickness The letter adds that the Howick and Pakuranga E.P.S. organisations have fully equipped first aid boxes at residences within a few yards of the school, and these outfits, too, are available at any time. Mrs. Patten agrees with the statement of "A Howick Parent" that a sick-room is a real necessity, especially as some of the children are a long way from their homes, and in serious cases medical attention could probably be secured more quickly at the school.
In reference to first aid training at the school, she says, all senior pupils have for the past four years received instruction from qualified St. John Ambulance Association and Red Cross teachers, and several of the teachers are qualified first-aiders.
