AMATEUR BOXING
NEWMARKET TOURNEY DOXALT* MARKS GOOD A boxer who has not quite realised expectations in the amateur ring this season J. Donald, made Rood last night when he defeated J. Howe, recent winner of the Auckland junior lightweight division. Donald is a hard puncher, particularly with his right, and Howe could not evade this attack last night and took some heavy blows to- the head. He was m a dazed condition in the second round, when ltefei-eo E. Armishaw stopped the bout. Other features of the evening were the clean two-handed punching of D. M. Taylor (7.10), who conceded weight and size to R. Angle and won impressively, the success of A. Jackson, who was runner-up in the Auckland Grammar School championship last week, and of another light-heavy-weight, I. Gregory, the Newton League footballer, the four wins of boys from V. Pyster's gymnasium at Onehimga, and the K.O. win of lightweight F. Monks in his first jGght. Monks was the first competitor that trainer "Scotty" Smith has put in the ring. Pyster was a very successful mentor in Dunedin, where he was established for eight years before coming to Auckland. The results were:—C. P. Sergeant. 8.3. stopped H. Sut.ton, 8.3. in the second round, using solid lefts repeatedly; R. H. Fry. 8.10, beat N. Baker, S.B; w. Miller, 9.4, who impressed when beaten at the Northern District Command's tourney, boxed coolly to beat T. Gardiner, 9.4, the loser taking punishment, in the third round; A. Taylor, 10.0, beat W. Kingirimn, 10.4, both being prono to use the open glove in a willing slog; W. Bree, 9.4. who had much the better style, beat W. Hunter, 9.2, in two rounds: J. Brajkovich, 10.3, beat N. Evans, 10.0, the loser being nearly out In the first round, making a recovery in the second, but stoppiiiK a hard blow to the nose in the third—a t.k.o. defeat; D. M. Taylor, 7.10, beat R. Angle, 8.2, fighting him to a standstill; J. Donald, 9.11, bca.t J. Howe. 9.8; O. Richards, 9.12, beat B. Bennett on points, Bennett, considerably taller, making a good recovery; I. Hoet, 12.5, on points; Robertson, 9.0, beat V. Cummer, 8.10, on points. Gummer was the feather-weight junior title winner at the championships and he met an experienced opponent in Robertson, their bout providing on interesting climax to the evening's entertainment. Gummer scored cleanly with his left and a right downward chop and led after the- first round, but took considerable punishment in the second. Robertson crowded his opponent in tho 'third and continually forced him over the ropes with a two-handed attack, Gummer using his left to effect, but lost gamely.
