CANDID MAORI
TOO LAZY TO WORK
A MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT
Even if he appeared to be too tired to stand up straight, and siouched over the rails of the dock in the Police Court this morning, Whiti Pairama (35), a well-built Maori, was at least candid, because he admitted he was too lazy to work. Pairama pleaded guilty to a charge which deemed him to be an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful means of support. Sub-Inspector Joyce said Pairama was yesterday found in the front room of an unoccupied house in the city. Pairama did an odd day's work now and again and then loafed for a few weeks. "Why don't you work," the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, asked Pairama. "Have you been ill?" "No," replied Pairama with a smile. "I'm just lazy." Pairama was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
