DEPOSITS LOST
TREASURY WINS £1270
By failing to poll at least one quarter of the number of votes credited to the successful candidate no fewer than 127 candidates forfeited their deposits in the general election, and the Treasurygains £1270. This result is in strong constrast to that in the 1938 election when only eight candidates lost their deposits of £10, but on that occasion the issue was a straight out one between the Governmentand the National party. While Mr. R. M. Algie, successful in Remuera, secured 1075 votes for each £1 of his deposit, Mr. R. J. S. Culver, People's Movement candidate for Auckland East, secured only four votes for each £1, his total being the smallest polled by any candidate in the Dominion. The 53 Democratic Labour candidates, led by Mr. J. A. Lee, were all defeated, and the only one to save his deposit was Mr. Lee himself. All the 25 People's Movement candidates lost their deposits, and 17 Independents and 16 Real Democracy candidates failed to save their money. Five Independent Labour candidates • also forfeited their deposits, and others in a similar position are: Fighting Forces League three, National and Independent Democratic Labour, two each. Liberal, Peace, Conservative, and Christian Pacifist, and Social Democrasy, one each.
