PARTY CHANGES
BETWEEN ELECTIONS
LABOUR'S REDUCED MAJORITY
At the last general election Labour was returned with 53 seats, the National party with 25, and there were two independents. At the dissolution of Parliament after the recent session Labour had 50 seats, the National party 25, and there were five independents.
During the five years since last election both Mr. Lee (Grej r Lynn) and the Speaker (Mr. Barnard, Napier) joined the Democratic Labour party. The National party won the Bay of Plenty seat after the death of Lieutenant Hultquist (Labour), in the Middle East. This brought Labour's strength down to fifty. Although the National party gained one seat, it also lost one when Mr. H. S. S. Kyle, who was elected as a "National candidate for Riccarton, became an Independent after the dissolution of the War Administration. Before the session ended Mr. Barnard declared that he would fight the election as an Independent.
