KING OF GREECE

Opposition To Continuance Of Monarchy

PLEBISCITE SUGGESTED

LONDON, September 22

Vigorous opposition to the continuance of the Greek monarchy is being expressed in some quarters in Greece. . . The Times correspondent in Cairo says that Greek guerilla leaders, who recently visited Egypt to confer with Allied military officials, declared that if King George of Greece attempted to return after the liberation- of the country, without first consulting the will of the people by a plebiscite, civil war would break out. The Times correspondent- recalls that the King, after the political crisis last March, issued a statement that he would consult the people after his return on the future political and constitutional status of the country. "This statement was welcomed," says the correspondent, "but various personalities and organisations are insisting that it would be better if such a decision were taken before the King's return. "Sections of the Greek community holding this view assert that the King was responsible for the introduction and maintenance of the unpopular semi-Fascist dictatorship, and his return, at the head of an army which, for military reasons, would be supported by British troops, might lead to the imposition of another dictatorship." .
