WATCH YOUR PAY ENVELOPE

Prior to 1942 the Commissioner of Taxes, to recover from a defaulting taxpayer, had to proceed to Court like any otlier taxpayer. Last year the Fraser Government took a backdoor route into the worker's pay envelope. It imposed on every employer the obligation to take from a worker's wages, before paying him any deductions required by the Commissioner of Taxes to meet not only overdue taxation, but also tax for the current year, even if not then due. A choice example of the way this works was given when the Invercargill Borough Council was directed to deduct 15/1 per month for five months from the pay envelope of a workman receiving £275 a year ami with five children under 16. This was to meet an absurd default assessment made by the Taxation Department because the man, in his ignorance, had not made a return of income. A ruthless debt collector is the Fraser Government. This iniquitous legislation is still on the Statute Book. Any wage-earner who falls behind with his taxes, whether through illnes=, misfortune or any other cause, can be victimised by means of it. There is only one way to remedy these things, Kejecc the Fraser Government and its shabby methods. Vote National. — (Ad.)
