ANY CHAMPIONS?
TAKANINI JUVENILES
F. SMITH'S STRONG TEAM
Practically all Takanini two-year-olds have been named, and their progress will be watched with interest in view of several prospects for the initial juvenile northern event, the Avondale Pioneer Handicap, at Ellerslie on September 11. Argovie, Ballroom, Broieform, Beau Volo, Sir Leon, Gay Chat and Avala are among those selected as likely to earn early distinction, and the critics are set an unusually hard task in selecting an early choice.
F. Smith has six representatives: Beau Siri, a black colt by Phaleron Bay—Falcon; Beau Volo, a bay colt by Phaleron Bay—Columbia; High Span, a black colt by Foxbriclge—Lady Thea; Coronaire, a chestnut colt by Coronach—Snowfield; My Bonnie, a bay filly by Coronach—La Poupee; and another filly by Coronach. There is no doubt that the progeny of Coronach reveal more quality than most of their age. However, they may not be on the scene early, and the most forward of the stable at this stage may be Beau Volo. A highly successful season appears likely for this contingent. Sister To Sweet Bisquit P. E. Pope has a team of five, of which Broieform, Avala and Sir Leon are fairly well forward. Broieform is remarkably like her full-sister, Sweet Biscuit, in every respect, and, if as good, she will be near the top flight. Avala, a bay gelding by Vaals—Britomartis, is speedy, while Sir Leon, a brown gelding by Dink—Chandlery, is the type to show his best early in the term. Cadder, a chestnut filly by Defaulter—Dutch Money, has not been up long, but is a great goer, and will come to hand quickly; while the Lang Bian— Hest gelding is a solid type and promises well. Sir Leon and Broieform may claim early attention. T. F. Verner has two juveniles—Gay Chat, by Chatsworth—Gay Marigold, and therefore half-brother to Merry May, which showed her best form in the autumn of last season. The other youngster is Little Flutter, a brown filly by Foxbridge from First Flutter. H. E. Gray's Pair Yours and Mine, by Theio—Blue Paper, and Argovie, by Theio—Timorous, are two forward youngsters in H. E. Gray's stable, which also shelters a gelding by Valette, sire of The Dozer. Yours and Mine is ready to show his ability at short notice. Ballroom, a black filly by Gvnerium— Princess Pat, which ran third in _ the parade, appears to be M. Marinovich's best prospect as a two-year-old. She is a very nice type and looks perhaps a shade better than Great Pleasure, a bay colt by Saleve—Fiddledine.
A filly by Dink—Tip Toes, attached to J. H. Wallace's stable, and a bay gelding bv Cambria Park — Valaria, under the guidance of W. F. Clifton, complete the Takanini complement of two-year-olds, and even at this stage the future is looked forward to with an unusual degree of optimism. Certainly no better-looking lot of two-year-olds has ever been assembled at this centre.
