MENIAL DUTIES
GRADUATE IN AIR FORCE
"SHEER ECONOMIC WASTE"
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, this day.
A letter complaining of the menial duties at which he was employed in the air force, duties quite inconsistent with his qualifications as a university graduate, was received from a member of the air force at a meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday. When he joined the army the writer of the letter was an intermediate school teacher. "It is a very strong indictment, and it seems to me that there is a very serious question to answer here," was the comment of the chairman, Mr. S. Rice, after the letter had been read. "We want to do everything we can for the war effort, but I think'we are entitled to express disapproval of this sort of thing. It is absurd that a qualified man like this should be used as batman. I know something of the army, and I know just what this man has had to submit to. He was selected for a position at an intermediate school from a large number of applicants. That shows his ability, and to employ him in this way is sheer economic waste."
