MISSING TWO YEARS
AUCKLAND SOLDIER SAFE
After being posted missing and believed a prisoner of war in Greece for two years, Driver Charles Mutch is safe and well in Allied hands, according to advice received by his wife, Mrs. Zenda Ameria Mutch, of 22, Grundy Street, Newton.
Leaving New Zealand with the First Echelon, Driver Mutch was taken prisoner in the Corinth Canal area in Southern Greece. His wife was later advised that he was missing and believed to be a prisoner of war. She also received a card sent by him from a prison camp. Two days later, however, Driver Mutch escaped with another soldier, and it is thought that he was living and hiding in Greece and Yugoslavia during the time there was no news of him, and that he finally found his way back to a Middle East base camp through Turkey, Syria and Palestine.
