POLICE VISIT CLUBS
SEQUEL IN POL/ICE COURT
In connection with the prosecution of two night clubs, in the Police Court to-day, under the amended regulations, for keeping premises for the consumption of liquor, the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, remarked that in view of the present position probably the matter had been overlooked. - Appearing for Harry Clifton Sallery and Leonard Grondin, Mr. G. P. Finlay said the new regulations made it impossible for such a club to carry on in a legal way. "In all these cases there is only one set of circumstances, but the defendants are charged under every possible Act and regulation, which, to me, seems like loading up an automatic rifle," added counsel. At the suggestion of the magistrate two charges were withdrawn. The defendant, Sallery, was fined £20, while Grondin was fined £2. Describing a visit paid to the M.N. Club in Shortland Street, Sergeant Adams said there was. no evidence of drunkenness and all the patrons were sober.. "This place is well fitted out and is about the nicest night club in the city," added the sergeant. The proprietor, Albert V. McKay, for whom Mr. Trevor Henry appeared and pleaded guilty, was fined £20.
