DOCTORS AT NIGHT
UNSATISFACTORY POSITION : The lack of an adequate medical service between the hours of seven and ten o'clock at night was pointed out at the Auckland Hospital Board s meeting last night, when prospects of an improvement were discussed. A letter from the Director-General of Health asked the board if it were possible for it to undertake the complete organisation of a free emergency night medical service. The department considered the present arrangement, providing doctors only after 10 p.m., unsatisfactory, especially so, as, at the cost of public funds, substantial profits "were-accruing to a private associar tion without a commensurate degree of responsibility on its part. The board decided to send a copy of the department's letter to _ the Auckland branch of the British Medical Association, advising it that the board would like representatives to meet its Finance Committee to discuss the matter.
