PRIVATE TAXICAB

REFUSAL OF LICENSE An application for a private taxicab license was refused by tne Metropolitan Licensing Authority at its meeting yesterday. Mr. A. JSinclair, representing the Auckland Taxicab Control Committee, said tne committee opposed the application primarily on account of the tyre position, which ■ was most acute. Applications made more than two months ago for tyres had not yet been satisfied, and some vehicles were immobilised as a result. Another reason for the control committee's opposition was that Mount Albert, the district concerned, was adequately served. He added tnat the Minister of Transport had expressed the view, that private taxicab services should be eliminated. Mr. Allum questioned the Authority's right to consider alleged shortages of (equipment when considering applications for licenses. Mr. Sinclair said that further licenses would prejudice existing services. . ,~„ c Mr. Allum said the availability of material was the responsibility , " ot another authority.
