OFF THE JACKS

MOTOR CAR. REGISTRATION INCREASE IN NUMBERS Many car owners have seemingly taken their vehicles off the jacks- in the hope of bringing them into use or disposing of them. According to the figures given by a Post Office official, the registrations up to the end of June this year were 4000 above the figure for the corresponding time last year. The total of ail vehicles was 25,000, and the registration of private cars numbered 20.000, a marked increase. According to a salesman in one of the largest firms in Auckland, there has been a busy period in recent months and cars have changed hands and been re-registered in larger numbers than for some time past. The opinion is held that a considerable number of owners in country districts have disposed of their vehicles, which townspeople have purchased in the hope of a more liberal allowance of petrol with the improvement in the war situation. It was also stated by one authority that in several cases cars that had been laid up had been re-regis-tered because of the prospect of the men returning from the Middle East, the owners hoping to be able to meet relatives and make some use of their cars. A few cars had ' also been bought and registered by members of the American forces.
