WILL BE RAISED
SCHOOL LEAVING AGE
MOVE TO BE' MADE SOON
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
The raising of the school leaving age by a year was forecast by the Minister of Education, Mr. Mason, at the opening of the Diamond Jubilee meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The measure would come before Parliament at the com. ing session, he said. . Other countries had raised the leaving age above that of New Zealand, and New Zealand was behind in adequate school buildings and requi* site number of teachers, stated the Minister, but if they waited for both buildings and teachers they would wait a long time. "Therefore, the Government has resolved to remedy the situation, and before the year .is out a change will be made," he added. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, in his address, agreed with Mr. Mason, and said that steps would have to be taken. First, the age would have to be raised to 15, and then to l<s. The teaching profession would have to put up with the disadvantages of overcrowding until new buildings could be built and more teachers trained.
