COMFORTS COMMITTEE

The annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Comforts Committee was held last evening when the report showed that during the year the committee' had distributed 16,180 books and magazines, 20,000 cigarettes, 185 packets of playing cards and 1425 parcels of fruit to inmates of hospitals and homes; 1333 special gifts of cake were also sent to patients in hospital. A large number of requests for assistance in clothing had been met. During the year the committee has distributed comforts to 41 homes and hospitals throughout the province. At Christmas toys and games were sent to all the orphan homes, and visits were paid to various old people's homes, where gifts were distributed. Over 200 letters of thanks and appreciation had been received from inmates of hospitals and homes. The auditor's report showed a' small surplus. The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr. R. Beckett; secretary, Miss' L. Moore; assistant secretary, Miss E. Thompson.
