"SHOULD GET £1500"
DEPARTMENTAL HEADS
SALARIES AT HOSPITAL
Reporting to the Auckland Hospital Board last night that it has endorsed the board's action in accepting the resignation of the hospital radiologist, Dr. C.. D. Costello, the hospital executive recommends that applications for the posts oi ! senior radiologist and an assistant radiologist, at salaries of £1500 arid *1000 a vear, be called immediately. When ■■ members suggested that such salaries would be likely to cause unrest among other departmental heads who were not receiving equal salaries, the chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said that the "board had been a bit mean in the past." He considered that- in the future the board would have to go into the question of the salaries it paid. In his opinion the heads of departments should be getting £1500 at least. If they wanted to get good men they had to pay the price. Mr. J. Sayegh raised the question of- lower paid staff members, to which Mr. Moody replied that he considered the question of salaries should Jbe considered with fairness toali;fro"rii-the. highest to the lowestpaid. Some.married-'friembers oO.he staff,'who- were"being"paid £4 17/6,could not support-homes on that wage. The finance committee reported that itihad been informed of Dr. T. W. J. Johnson's action, as chairman of; the ' hospital executive, in writing to England to 'see if any radiologists in that country would be prepared to come to New Zealand, and that it recommended- Dr. • Costello be informed that the board -would release him from its service on September 30 next, or earlier if the board could- make suitable arrangements. ■■ . -. •" • ■ The report was adopted.
