HIGHER WAR PENSION
Australian Ino-aase Of 20 Per Cent NEW REPATRIATION ACT N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Reed. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. The new Australian Repatriation Act, which provides for increased war pensions and other benefits, comes into operation to-day. The main b-iefit is an average increase of 20 per cent in all war pensions. Other benefits include: Preference to returned servicemen by Government Departments and contractors doing Government work; war pensions and other benefits for the women's auxiliaries; removal of the means test for war widows and widowed mothers of unmarried servicemen; pensions payable to de facto wives at the discretion of the Repatriation Commission.
RECORD BRITISH HARVEST
500,000 HELPERS NEEDED British Official Wireless Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, May 5. The aid of 500,000 civilians to gather what is expected to be a record harvest for Britain was asked by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. R. S. Hudson, speaking in London. He said he looked to London to supply help to neighbouring counties, since farm staffs were growing far nnre than they could hope to harvest unaided. As the war rose to a climax, more ships would be required for military purposes, so still more food must be grown in Britain.
BEEF AND MILK
SHORTAGES IN SYDNEY N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. In order to make more beef available for the canneries, the quantities for civilian consumption in Sydneyare to be reduced. Mutton will make up the leeway. Sydney's milk supplies have also been heavily reduced. No milk is now being supplied to milk bars, and the quantity for shop sale has been cut by 50 per cent.
TEMPORARY COMMAND
GEN. ANDREWS' SUCCESSOR Rec. 2.30 p.m. RUGBY, May 5. It is officially announced that Major-General William S. Key has assumed temporary command of the American Army in European theatre of operations. By virtue of seniority he succeeds the late LieutenantGeneral Prank Maxwell Andrews, who was killed in an air accident in Iceland.
