MINISTER'S STATEMENT

STATE AND PRIVATE FORESTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Invited to-night to comment on the statement issued-by Forest Products, Limited, the Minister or Industries and Commerce, Mr. Sullivan, said the application made by the company for a license to erect and operate a paper mill cut across a similar application by the State Forest Department, which was received much earlier, than that from Forests Products.

"The Department, representing the whole of the people of New Zealand, has immensely larger areas of forest than Forest Products or any other private company," continued the Minister, "and the Department, too, is immensely concerned with the problem of utilisation. So, too, are other private companies. The Government has the whole question of forest utilisation under consideration at the present time."

Mr. Sullivan said that all the data bearing on forest utilisation have now been compiled and he expected to be in a position to make a decision within the next fortnight.
