TOPICAL COMMENT

HALF-SISTER TO THE CHAMPION There was money for Silver Coin, running in the Kindergarten colours in the maiden at Hastings on Saturday, but she drew 17, and only at the end could be seen running on into eighth place. Silver Coin is interesting, as she is a three-year-old half-sister by Siegfried to Kindergarten. FOR THE FUNDS Piko Piko and Talhuia, sold by Mr. Frank Ormond last Saturday at auction for the patriotic funds, went cheaply. Piko Piko went to Mr. O. Evans, Hastings, for 50gs, and Taihuia was purchased by the Clive owner-trainer, R. Gregory, for 72gs. HURDLER OF PROMISE Now an inmate of L. Knapp's stable at Awapuni, Poutu showed a fund of promise at his first attempt in public as a hurdler. That was at the Taranaki meeting on March 6. The Posterity gelding opened his account at Hawke's Bay on Saturday, and although he had not much to spare from Cuisinier and Native Song he should go further. GROUND SUITED HIM The success of Monmouth in the Twyford Hack Handicap at Hastings did not come out of its turn, for the Alchemic gelding had done considerable travelling without any material reward. The easing of the ground found conditions more to his liking. He is owned by Mr. C. T. Keeble, who also bred the dam, Courtesan, a daughter of the Boniform mare Bon Marche. LIKES BIT OF DISTANCE Although Pompit was well beaten in - the Hawke's Bay Cup, he ran a greatly improved race in the Te Mahanga Handicap on the second day at Hastings, when he beat all but Classform. No doubt the more vigorous apprentice in the saddle played a material part. This Pombal gelding has seemingly found his rightful role, a middle-distance performer. OWNERS' REMINDERS To-morrow.—Canterbury Jockey Club acceptances, forfeits and general entries. 1 Saturday.—Ngaruawahia acceptances. ,
