SHOOTING SEASON

DATES ANNOUNCED OPENING ON MAY 1 The 16 days, May 1 to May 16, are gazetted as the shooting season in the Auckland acclimatisation district for cock pheasants, Californian and Australian quail, grey, mallard and spoonbill duck, black swan and pukeko. In any one day no one may take or kill, mere than nine head of cock pheasants, 15 in all of duck and of black swan, and eight of pukeko. A stand may be claimed in the Auckland district at any time after 10 a.m. on April 25 (Easter Sunday) by mean;, of a stake with a board attached having the name and full postal address of the claimant and the number of his license plainly marked on it. In the Whangarei district "pegging" will date from April 17. Whangarei will be the only district open north of Auckland, the Hobson and Mongonui districts not having asked for an open season. The Auckland district extends from Taumarunui to Te Hana. The Rotorua district includes Taupo. In the Rotorua acclimatisation district the season for cock pheasants and Californian and Australian quail will be from May 1 to June 30, and that for mallard, grey and spoonbill duck, pukeko, paradise duck and black swan as from May 1 to May 16. The daily personal bag is limited to six head of cock pheasants, 15 in all of mallard, grey, paradise and spoonbill duck, 10 of grey duck, 10 of pukeko and five of paradise duck. The notices respecting game fill ten pages of a supplementary Gazette, which was delivered to-day. In the Whangarei acclimatisation district, the season for cock pheasants and quail is from May 1 to June 6, and that for grey duck and pukeko from May 1 to May, 16. In the Wellington district there is to be a season of from May 1 to July 31 for hares, pheasants and quail, and from May 1 to May 16 for duck, pukeko and black swan. Variations in Dates The duck shooting season is from May 1 to May 16 in all districts throughout New Zealand, but there is a variation in the dates for other classes of game. Quail and chukor may be shot in the Ashburton district from May 1 to July 31. In Hawera the season for pheasants and quail is May 1 to July 4; and in Hawke's Bay from May 1 to June 6. In the Lakes District for Californian quail May 1 to July 31. In Marlborough for quail and chukor for the same period. In Nelson the season for Cali- ■ fornian quail is from May 1 to June 30. In North Canterbury for pheasants, quail and chukor May 22 to July 3. In Otago for quail from May 1 to July 31, and for black swan from May 1 to May 16. In Stratford for pheasants and quail from May 1 to July 4, and similarly for Taranaki. In the "Waiapu district the season for pheasants and quail is to be from May 1 to June 12, and in the Waimarino district from May 1 to July 31. In the Waitaki district the Californian quail season is to be from May 29 to June 30. Wanganui has the longest season for pheasants and quail, extending from May 1 to July 31. A meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society to consider arrangements for the season and, among other matters, finalise the pools for cartridges will be held at the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday evening, April 17.
