BUS SERVICES

NEEDS OF PUBLIC

INCREASE ASKED FOR An application for the restoration of the service on the City-Point Resolution route, which was reduced last August, was made by the Auckland Transport Bus Co. at a meeting of the Metropolitan® Licensing Authority this morning. Mr. T. H. Bormett, manager of the company, said that at present 142 trips were made in a week, carrying 6000 passengers and covering 650 miles. The proposed timetable provided for 208 trips and an increased mileage of 300 miles a week. It was also asked that the Portland Road service be increased from 130 to 173 trips a week. The company sought to increase the benzine allowance from 200 to 270 gallons a week, which, it was hoped, would relieve to some extent the overloading which existed on the peak trips. The application was supported by a number of residents who referred to the distance pepple had to walk at present to the trams and the fact that the district being in the blackout area made young women apprehensive of walking unescorted down the streets. Evidence was given by Mr. T. Avery, of Ridge Tyre Remoulding. Limited, that 14 of the bus company's tyres which his firm had handled had been ruined through overloading. a In connection with the feeder service between Blockhouse Bay and Avondale, the company asked for an increase of the 232 trips a week by 35 trips to relieve the present overloading. It was stated that the service had not had an increase for some years. The district had grown and the "private motorists were now dependent on the bus. An increase from a 20-minute to a 16-minute service on the Avondale-Point Chevalier route was also asked for by the company. The authority reserved its decision.
