Although he has spent most of five years in an iron lung in the Children s Hospital, John McMahon Sydney s "boy in the iron lung," as he is known, keeps amazingly cheerful and courageous. He was admitted to hospital with, infantile paralysis just before Christmas, 1937. • ~ week he celebrated his s birthday—in the iron lung all day because he had bronchitis! Usually the hospital staff make him presents and give him special meals to celebrate the day, but this year at his own request he had an austerity birthday. John does not consider that his illness is a bar to aiming high in I j H i s brilliance in art and the study of music has surprised doctors and nurses. For his birthday he received from his mother the "International Encyclopaedia of Music and Musicians.
"It has more than 2000 pages. I am so anxious to study it," he said.
