THE COSTLEY HOME
In your account., of Hospital's record 'of' steady progress you have .overlooked instance of the, reverse-r^oprjnerx--; tion Costley's bequest ;f<s a home for aged people, "Thus the Costley Home came_to be erected;" but to make the record comDlete it should be added further that' as a home for the aged it has now practically ceased to exist—or at all events it had when I last visited the place a year or more ago—having been commandeered by the Hospital Board for the purposes of the infirmary; a breach of trust for which it is difficult to see any justification. One by one the wards of the Costley Home had been or were being' diverted from their proper purpose and turned into infirmary wards; and not only Was there no accommodation available for any further inmates of the class for whom the home was intended but some half dozen or more old men who had been there for years had actually been ejected to make room for the infirmary patients, a striking example of the fact that trusts do not enforce themselves, aiifcthat when created for the benefit of people who are not in a position to fight their own battles'they can be violated with impunity.
