before war with japan The burning of tyres at a camp in the Northern Military district, which was alleged to have taken place in February, 1942, was referred to at this morning's meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. A statement had been made to this effect by a member of the council at a meeting on December 3, and had been reported in the Press. _ , TT A reply from Major-General P. H. Bell, D.5.0.. Commandant of the Northern Military District, was received at the meeting to-day. It ■stated that the burning of tyres had taken place in November, 1941, and as Japan had not then entered the war the matter was not of such great importance as it would have been had the burning taken place since. The council received the letter.
