BEYOND CONTINENT

Future Use Of South African Troops DEBATE ON SMUTS' MOTION Rec. 10 a.m. CAPETOWN, Jan. 28. Opening the debate on his motion to authorise the sending of South African troops outside the African continent. the Prime Minister, General Smuts, told the House of Assembly that it would be necessary to keep some forces inside Africa even after Tunisia had been cleared of the Axis forces, but a substantial number of the South Africans would be available for fighting in areas close to South Africa. They would not be sent to America or the Far East, but would help to win the victory in areas where the war would soon be decided. The Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Malan, moved an amendment demanding South Africa's immediate withdrawal from the war.
