"The cleaning out of the Japanese on Guadalcanar is just a matter 01 time," declared a high-ranking American officer on the island. Nobody can stand the kind of losses they have been having. Fifteen Japanese are being killed for each American lost." TT „-+^ Since August the combined united States Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force in the Solomons have destroyed 800 Japanese fighters, according to Colonel Laveme Saunders, ' commander of the army heavy bomi bardment forces. The ratio ox Japanese to American plane losses is six to one. American torpedo boats hit two Japanese destroyers, and possibly a third, off Guadalcanar Island in the Solomons. After the encounter the enemy steamed off to the north-west. On the island of Guadalcanar the Americans are still gaining ground.
