At least two witnesses from Canada are ,'awa.ited by the police before proceeding with the case against Leo Edward Morland, a metallurgist, charged with the theft of gold valued at £31,496, according to a statement by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Gummings. It is not yet known when the witnesses will arrive due to the uncertainties of wartime transport, and as the final investigation has not yet been made, it is uncertain whether the witnesses will be confined' to two. Mr. Cummings added that for the sake of the convenience of witnesses, it was probable that the trial would be held in Christchurch.
Morland was first charged in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, on August 25 that, on or about October 29, 1940, being a servant of the Arahura Gold Dredging Company, he stole 36500z of alluvial gold valued at £31,496, the property of the company.
