FALSE PRETENCES
"PLAUSIBLE" PAINTER SENTENCE OP SIX MONTHS Four, charges of obtaining goods and money totalling £27 15/ by false pretences were admitted by William Freney Keenan, a painter of 41, when he appeared in the Police Court, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., to-day. Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said the money was obtained from shopkeepers by Keenan, who bought goods, tendered valueless cheques and received change. In another case he obtained money by presenting a worthless promissory note. "A divorced man, Keenan has, for the last 20 years, been in and out of gaol." added Mr. Trethewey. "He has over 60 previous convictions over that period. He is quite incorrigible in taking shopkeepers down, and is a very plausible fellow." Asked if he had anything to say, Keenan replied that there was nothing much he could say. "I Avill take what's coming to me in the right spirit," he said. That was a term of six months' imprisonment which Mr. Luxford imposed on the first charge. On the others he was convicted and discharged.
