DISPOSAL OF RUBBISH

May I draw attention to what residpnts of Westmere consider to be a very grave danger and nuisance, that is, the dumping of raw rubbish at the A.C. Council tip in our district. Almost two years ago a deputation of residents waited upon the council to try and get something done about this nuisance. Five hundred people protested about the smelly the flies the rats and the general condition' of the tip. The chairman of the works committee was very indignant that we should suggest that any of the above nuisances existed,, as he himself had stood upon the tip and could smell nothing. He need not have stood upon the tip, but just by riding in the tram car from the top of Garnet Road to the bottom in the prevailing wind, he would have caught the smell at the top and had it with him at the bottom. The conditions as laid down by the Health • Officer in Auckland for the dumping of raw rubbish at this tip are as follows: All raw rubbish must be covered by two feet of earth. This is not being done, as I have been watching operations for some weeks now and the most earth covering I have seen has been one foot or six inches. This tip has been very bad this summer, and just half an hour ago I inspected it, and there were four fires burning underneath the light earth covering, violating another condition laid down. Also, there was a heap of raw rubbish uncovered, and the smell was anything but pleasant. Apart from the danger of disease, to have on a beautiful night this nasty smell of raw and burning rubbish permeate right through the house is more than anyone should put up with, and we, the residents of Westmere, ask that those responsible will, in the very near "uture, do something about it. W. E. KI LB URN. Chairman, Westmere Householders' Progressive Association.
