CRIME PUNISHED

GAOL FOR BURGLARY LIFE RUIhSED BY DRINK A number of prisoners who had pleaded guilty to offences when brought before the Magistrate's Courts were before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court to-day for sentence. A sentence of three months' imprisonment on each of two charges of burglary, the sentences to be cumulative, was passed on Daniel Paparoa, who was also sentenced to one month on a charge of theft from a dwelling, this sentence to be concurrent with the others. " Appearing for Harold Alexander McNeill, who had admitted a charge of receiving tobacco knowing it to have been stolen, and of breaking and entering and theft, Mr. Noble said the prisoner seemed to be a dipsomaniac. Drink was his curse, and had rumed his life, as this was apparent from his list of 40 convictions, 37 of which were the result of drinking. / His Honor agreed the cause of the prisoner's trouble was undoubtedly drink. He would be sentenced to six months' imprisonment for breaking and entering and theft, and three months on the receiving charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Cyril Huru Cash, a Maori, aged 18, who pleaded guilty to a charge of incest, was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
