WAR VEGETABLES

MT. EDEN'S EFFORT USE OF PUBLIC PARK Three acres of Potter's Park, Mount Eden, have been converted into a vegetable garden, and a big crop is now nearly ready for harvesting. The park, which is situated at the junction of Dominion Road and Balmoral Road, consists of approximately seven acres, and in one portion of it play and recreational equipment has been provided for children. As the level area of the park and its slopes were suitable for cultivation, the Mount Eden Borough Council decided some time ago to plant vegetables on a big scale, and it is intended when they are sold to pay the proceeds to the War Expenses Account. Under the scheme 15 men were employed at preparing the ground and planting the crops. Good headway was made. On the level ground, formerly used for football in the winter months, potatoes have grown luxuriantly, and on the slopes there is now a good showing of tomatoes, silver beet, beans, pumpkins and other vegetables. The Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. R. J. Mills, said to-day that the area in the park for children to play-was not affected. It was proposed to sell the vegetables in patriotic shops in the borough, or, if necessary, dispose of them through the markets.
