FOOTWEAR STANDARDS
CONSERVING M.\TKFtI\I.S
Without placing any limit on designs, but providing for the conser- \ ation of manpower and materials, specifications for footwear have been completed by the Standards Institute, and will be issued as the NewZealand Emergency Standard Specifications for Footwear.
The specifications provide minimum requirements of (|uality of materials and component parts, construction, workmanship and finish, which arc the essential characteristics of good footwear, states the Labour newspaper The Standard. Limitation of designs in relation to yearly output will be affected by a separate simplified practice for the manufacture of footwear.
A series of 15 standards covers two classes of girls' shoes; three classes ot" women's shoes, including two classes in which black, brown or blue leathers may be used; three classes of men's boots, including working boots; two classes of men's shoes; two classes of youths' shoes; men's and youths' slippers; children's sandals and nurses' ward shoes.
The standards are Intended not only to fulfil an immediate purpose, but also to provide a measure of permanent value.
