SHOT FIRED
TO FRIGHTEN LOITERERS
ELDERLY MAN CHARGED (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Frequently losing sleep through young people congregating in his doorways and making nuisances of themselves, John Hutlcy, accd 73, a storekeeper, fired a .22 rifle through a door, Intending to frighten loiterers. He was charged in the Kaitaia Magistrate's Court to-day with discharging a firearm so near a public place as to endanger passers-by.
Hutley was convicted and discharged on assuring Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., that he would hot try such methods again.
The police said an airman was leaning against the door and had a wood splinter in his pocket, but no damage was done. The young people did not move until they saw Hutley with the gun 'and noticed a hole in the door.
Hutley said he could not. kill a fowl at three yards with the cartridges, which were specially loaded with fine shot for the destruction of rats. "Young people are always in my doorway and I cannot sleep at night for them," he added.
