ORAKEI LAND APPEAL

COURT RESERVES DECISION

The appeal of the Crown against an interim judgment in the Native Land Court by Judge F. O. V. Acheson in respect to the occupation by natives of houses on the papakainga reserve and church site Crown lands at Orakei was concluded yesterday afternoon in the Native Appellate Court, before Chief Judge G P Shepherd and Judges E. M. Beechev and R. P. Dykes. reply to the argument by Mr. V. R. Meredith, associated with Mr A. O. Darby, for the Crown, Mr. Ngapipi Rewete addressed the Court in Maori for the natives, Mr. C P Newton interpreting. He declared that in the opinion of the Maori people Judge Acheson's judgment was right and good. Mr. Ngapipi Rewete, was asked by the Court whether they had considered the question of being represented by a lawyer, and whether the natives were aware that the Crown had offered to pay for the services of a lawyer to represent them if they so desired.

Mr. Rewete replied that the natives had known of this, and at a meeting had decided to have him (Rewete) to represent them. Decision was reserved.
