DAMAGE TO ROADS
TRAFFIC IN PAPAKURA
An agreement with the Public Works Department concerning repairs to roads in Papakura as the result of damage caused by heavy motor vehicles, is to be sought by the Papakura Borough Council. This decision was made at a meeting last night, when the chief traffic inspec tor, Mr. J. E. Ainsworth, replied to the council's protest against the ex cessive speed of vehicles passing through and the damage caused.
Mr. Ainsworth said he had discussed the matter with the Public Works Department. The existing route of these vehicles was theshortest and a saving of petrol and tyres was thus made. He added that an inspector had been instructed to use traps for drivers exceeuing the speed limit in the borough.
A further letter was received from the overseer of the department advising that drivers of lorries passing through the borough must keep within the traffic regulations.
Mr. Ainsworth said he understood that the Public Works Department would assist local bodies by repairing the road surfaces. The Mayor, Mr. S. Evans, said Dominion Road and Wairoa Road were in a dangerous state owing to the extremely heavy traffic of late. The council decided to write the district engineer of the Public 'Works Department seeking an agreement.
