WELLINGTON-GISBORNE TRIP

(0.C.) GISBORNE, this day. General Manager of Railways, Mr. E. Casey, accompanied by Departmental officials,. made a railcar trip from Wellington to Gisborne in less tnan 10 hours on Saturday.

On the southern portion of the new section between Gisborne and Waikokopu certain work is required in connection with making up banks, ballasting and the lifting of the track, but generally speaking the party found the line in good condition throughout. Mr. Casey said he was very satisfied with the progress made in the freight carried already by the regular night goods services, and the support given to date seemed to suggest that there will be considerable goods traffic in future. Mr. Casey said that when passenger -trains commenced it might not be possible to institute as full a passerifeer service as Jhe Department would have provided if times had been normal, because work was still required on 'the line, and also because of the restrictions on travel.
