Enemy Fighters Engaged Over

North Sea

The United States Army Headquarters state: Eleven United States Army Air Force Flying Fortresses were attacked to-day over the North Sea by 20 to 25 Fock-Wulf 190's. During a 20-minute air battle, six enemy fighters were destroyed or damaged.

An enemy shell exploded in the cockpit of one Flying Fortress killing the co-pilot and injuring the pilot. Enemy fire also destroyed two engines of this aircraft. The Fortress was also hit in many other places, but no other casualties were suffered. All the aircraft landed safely.

The Air Ministry communique states that last night Coastal Command Hudsons attacked an enemy convoy off the Dutch coast. Three ships were hit. One aircraft is missing.

A small number of enemy planes were over the coastal area of southern England last night, bombs being dropped at several points. Only slight damage was reported and one enemy bomber was destroyed. Berlin radio announced that the Luftwaffe last night raided Portsmouth, causing fires in the harbour area.
