DRUNK IN CHARGE
HOME GUARD DRIVER
ARMY TRUCK SPEEDING
(0.C.)
WHANGAREI, this day,
On a charge of intoxication while in charge of an army vehicle Martin Kaipo, a Home Guard sergeant, was sentenced by Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., at Kaitaia, to three weeks' hard labour and his driving license was suspended for 18 months. The police said that Kaipo conveyed men from a Home Guard camp in an army truck, spending the day at Kaitaia, and that after stopping at a hotel on the way back to camp the Journey became a series of swerves and bursts of speed. The truck occupants on one occasion were thrown off the seats and two passengers transferred for safety to another army vehicle. Into this vehicle Kaipo backed his truck on arriving at their destination.
