WORKMAN'S DEATH

FALL THROUGH ROOF

FINDING AT INQUEST

A fall through the roof of a build-? ing on March 7. and the injuries he' received then were the cause of the death of Arthur Leonard Laurence, a married man. aged 36 years, who resided at oj. Alberta Street. Point Chevalier. This was the finding at the inquest conducted by Mr. J. H. Lux lord, coroner, this morning l Laurence died in the Auckland; Hospital on March 10.

Evidence was given that Laurence was employed by H. C. Clarke. Ltd.. on roofing work at the John Burns building. Most of the roofing had' been completed and Laurence was engaged in carrying ridging. He fell through the roof and down towards the cart entrance. He struck a guy rope and was thrown on to the first floor, suffering extensive injuries. It was stated in evidence that the roofing was of a patent material which was still in the green state A workmate stated that Laurence 'had commented earlier in the dav that a particular sheet of the roofing was ".lust like butter."' That was the actual sheet through which he fell. I he company's foreman had warned the men not to walk over the roofing unless planks had been laid for the purpose.
