AIRMAN'S DEATH
FLIGHT-LT. GRIFFITHS
ADVENTUROUS CAREER
The death of Flight-Lieutenant Eric Neville Griffiths, which has been announced, brings to a close an adventurous career. Flight-Lieuten-ant Griffiths was educated at the Wellington Boys' College and afterwards took a keen interest in aviation. In 1934 he left Wellington and went to China, where he ferried aeroplanes for the Chinese war lords. He also acted as a mechanic with the Byrd Antarctic expedition. In 1936 he began to fly machines from England to Spain until the enforce-
ment of the non-intervention policy put a stop to these activities. He then joined the Spanish Government forces and took part in the fighting in that country. While in Spain he cabled a proposal of marriage to Miss Fay Robinson, of Wellington, and was accepted. In 1937 he was granted three months' furlough from the war zone after being struck in the right shoulder by an expanding bullet while acting as an escort to Government bombers and he returned to Wellington for the purpose of getting married.
