QUICK PACKING

Appeal To Women To Send In Garments

A "bombshell," as she called it, was dropped by the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, at the meeting of the women's activities sub-committee of the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Council this morning. Mrs. Allum said a letter had been received from the secretary of the Provincial Patriotic Board, stating that the next consignment of parcels for overseas was to be packed by the end of January. "As Yorkshire House is closing on Christmas Eve for three weeks, this means that the packing will, have to be done in a very short time," said Mrs. Allum. It was agreed, however, that arrangements should be made to hire larger rooms, in which case the packing could be accomplished in the time.

In this connection, it was requested that all women in the various districts who still had garments which were not finished, should make a special effort to send them in before Christmas, so that they would be ready when packing began. The Yorkshire House report stated that large quantities of wool had been sent out during the month for distribution by the various subcommittees. Yorkshire House had been used as a depot for receiving Christmas puddings for Carrie Hostel, and it was reported that the response promised to be excellent. Tinned goods were still coming in for future parcels, and gratitude was expressed for these.

The following figures give an idea of the work accomplished during the year by the women of Auckland, to whom Miss B. Carnachan paid tribute for their unfailing energy. The garments sent to the Patriotic Fund Board are as follows: Balaclavas, 10,686; scarves, 9213; mittens, 8550 pairs; pullovers, 578; hussifs, 1936. A total of 6713 pairs of socks had been included in overseas parcels. A further 1000 articles which had been dispatched last night brought the total to 38,676 articles. The report of the reception subcommittee was read and the Navy League report was read by Mrs. R. G. Coats.
