MAORIS REMANDED
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
THREE MEN BEFORE COURT
Remanded from last Monday, Phillip Matthews (23) and Harry Matthews (35), two Maoris, made another appearance in the Police Court this morning, Harry Matthews being charged with fighting with an unknown person in Nelson Street on November 22, and Phillip Matthews, with assaulting Dave Repia so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Last Monday, Sub-Inspector Macnamara stated that it was alleged the two accused had been mixed up in a fight on Saturday, November 22, and that shortly afterwards, another Maori, Repia, was found lying injured on the footpath. Repia subsequently died, added Mr. Macnamara.
This morning another Maori named Henry Matthews appeared with Harry and Phillip Matthews in the dock before Mr. J. Morling, S.M. With Phillip Matthews, he was jointly charged with unlawfully killing Dave Repia on November 22, and thereby committing the crime of manslaughter. Henry Matthews was also charged with assaulting Repia so as to cause actual bodily harm.
Phillip Matthews was represented by Mr. R. E. N. Matthews, Henry Matthews by Mr. A. K. Turner, and Harry Matthews by Mr. K. C. Aekins.
On the application of the police all three accused were remanded to appear on December 8. In each case bail was allowed.
