SOLDIER SWIMMERS

ALL MUST BE PROFICIENT In future all Expeditionary Force and home defence soldiers who cannot swim are to be taught the art. Orders to this effect have been issued by the Chief of the General Staff, Major-General E. Puttick, D.S.O. Men who have not learnt to swim are to receive special instruction in place of recreational training until they are able to cover 30 yards. It is considered that once a man is able to swim this distance he will be keen to make further progress. In the Northern Military District surf and life-saving clubs are cooperating with the. army to instruct soldiers already possessing life-saving and other qualifications how to pass on their knowledge to non-swimmers. Future instructors are being chosen from all units, and a class will be commenced at the Tepid Baths next Saturday, where such men will be taught how to instruct others. Some of the soldiers will be taught lifesaving up to certificate standard.
