PATRIOTIC EFFORT
ONEHUNGA ACTIVITIES
WOMEN'S FINE WORK
The main patriotic efforts in Oi*hunga recently have been the raising of funds for the farewelling of men leaving the district for service overseas.
"While the public generally has responded in a liberal manner, the most outstanding effort in the district, and probably one unsurpassed in the Dominion, is that achieved by the Merrielands Ladies' Social Committee, operating in a small area of the borough," said the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. Park, to-day. "I have only to-day received an amount of £30 from this organisation, including an amount of £6 3/3 raised by a little girl, Verna Baker, cousins of hers and another friend. These ladies have, during the last 12 months, sent in donations to the fund totalling over £100. Considering the small number of people from which this amount has been drawn, it is an example which deserves all the publicity possible to spur others who are, perhaps, not so energetic into action. I would like to quote the letter received by this committee from Verna Baker. She says: 'I am sending on the sum of £6 3/3, the amount raised at a little bazaar held by my cousins and a little friend and myself. We want the money to help towards the wallets and notes which are given to the soldiers.' The 'note' referred to in this letter is the 10/ note which is put into each wallet presented. I think these efforts furnish proof that here are ladies who realise that a war is on," added Mr. Park.
