FURTHER CASES
SERVICE APPEALS No. 1 BOARD HEARINGS A number of appeals lodged on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship were considered by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board this morning. Appeals by or on behalf of the following reservists were adjourned: Charles Eric Bone, sailmaker (appeal by Director of National Service); Edward John Brown, welder and boilermaker (appeal by Director of National Service); Dyncan Finlayson McDonald, analytical chemist (appeal by Booth Macdonald and Company, Limited); C Gilmour Scott Price, farmer; Francis Alfred Bradv, dairy farmer (appeal by Thomas "Brady); Graham Charles Robertson, farmer (appeal by Mrs. E. C. Robertson); Bernard Thomas Macßeth, sheetmetal worker apprentice (appeal by , Hardleys, limited); Alured Mervyh Sercombe, sheetmetal worker (appeal by Hardleysj, Limited); Henry William Stebbing McMath, newspaper worker (appeal by Mrs. E. H. McMath); Matthew Stevens, industrial sewing machine mechanic (appeal by H. A. Tuck and Company, Limited): Tom Leslie Langham, clerk; Selwyri Ivor Williams, munitions worker (appeal by Colonial Ammunition Company); Clement Edward Heath Sykes, fitter, Rowland Fitchett Marriott; assistant locomotive engineer (appeal by Director of National Service).
Appeals Dismissed Appeals by or on behalf of the following reservists were dismissed, in most cases subject to reservist not being called up before a certain date, postponement being all that was asked in some cases:—Jack Pollock, baker (appeal also made by Mrs. E. Pollock); Herbert Kennerly Ingram, sheetmetal worker (appeal by Hardleys, Limited); Charles Robinson Vaughan, toolmaker, electrician and motor mechanic (appeal by Radio (1936), Limited); George Thomas Vernon Healy, casual boilermaker (appeal by N.Z. Glass Manufacturers Company Proprietary, Limited).
An appeal by Neville John Bishop, warehouse salesman, on conscientious objection grounds was formally dismissed and non-combatant service ordered. Reservist s tat fed that he was a member of the Exclusive Brethren, and although he was not prepared to take life he was willing to do non-combatant service in the army. The board announced its decision, after consideration, to dismiss the appeal on the ground of public interest of Victor Wallace Johnston, theological student, New Zealand Bible Training Institute, whose lease was heard yesterday.
